Pitney Bowes - Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
We take our role in the wider community very
seriously. In the UK, our CSR programme is largely focused on
literacy and, since 2004, we have worked to raise funds and
awareness for the National Literacy Trust.

The annual Pitney Bowes Pushing the Envelope campaign sees some
of the nation’s favourite stars create unique envelope designs
which are auctioned on eBay, with all proceeds donated to the
Trust. In the last 5 years, Pushing the Envelope has raised over
£40k for this deserving and worthwhile cause.
What is CSR?
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development in its publication "Making Good Business Sense" by Lord Holme and Richard Watts, used the following definition.
"Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large"
Pitney Bowes and CSR
Pitney Bowes has a long history of investing in the communities in which it has a significant presence. Most recently, to focus on meeting the brand promise of Engineering the Flow of Communication, our Community Investments programs have embraced the initiative of Literacy & Education, the building blocks of effective communication and well being.
Projects and initiatives support local
literacy charities in several locations where PB has a presence.
Projects and initiatives support local literacy charities in several locations where PB has a presence. Most notably, the Pitney Bowes Pushing the Envelope initiative – now in its third year – raises funds for international literacy organisations through the auction of celebrity-designed envelopes.
Why the link with literacy?
Improved literacy will always mean improved communication. Our brand strap-line Engineering the flow of communication™ describes how Pitney Bowes solutions make communication simpler, more integrated, more efficient and effective.
What else does Pitney Bowes do in the CSR field?
Employee Volunteerism - From one employee to two or more, our volunteer activities are an important part of our corporate culture and a key element of our community support. Examples include:
- 6 PB employees recently spent a week in Sri Lanka rebuilding houses destroyed by the Tsunami
- Various PB people running the London marathon in aid of leukemia and cancer charities (amongst others)
- In 2005, 2 PB employees joined thousands of volunteers in the Mexican city of Puebla to work on housing projects for low-income families
Employee-driven Giving - Each year our employees log thousands of hours of community service with charities throughout the U.S. and the world. To support the many and varied philanthropic interests of our employees, The Pitney Bowes Employee Involvement Fund provides funding to qualified charitable organizations through the annual Pitney Bowes Employee Involvement Campaign, Matching Gifts, and volunteer grant programs.
Activity in the local community - Pitney Bowes takes an active role in helping charities and schools that are local to its business premises. Eg, in Harlow, the location of PB’s UK HQ, PB has:
- Recently donated £1000 to the Harlow Homeless Centre through the employee giving scheme
- Donated (again through the employee giving scheme) £7000 in 2005 to a local school to help build a playground
- Invited 30 children and their families – all supported by the Homestart charity – to a Christmas lunch party at Pitney Bowes
- Arranged a design a Christmas card charity fund-raiser amongst local schools
- Organised factory tours for local school children
